NIFA Grants 2025: VMLRP and VSGP-RPE
LifeStock entered into a cooperative agreement with USDA-NIFA to provide enhanced awareness of the Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program (VMLRP) and the Veterinary Services Grant Program-Rural Practice Enhancement (VSGP-RPE) and to mentor applicants through the application process, as needed.

Pay close attention to the RFA
Almost all competitive US government grants require applicants to supply information listed on a Request For Applications, or RFA. This verifies the applicant’s ability to perform the work required, and allows applicants to be judged on an equal basis.
This guide refers to details of each RFA, and will help you map out your progress. Remember you must fulfill all requirements within the RFA as it is the definitive document.
Here are the 2 programs we can assist with:
1) The Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program (VMLRP)
This grant is for a private veterinarian who wants to, or already is, working with livestock in a shortage area. Note that for 2025 the maximum award amount has been increased to $40,000 per year for 3 years with an additional payment of $15,600 per year to cover tax liability, for a total maximum award of $166,800: $120,000 for loan repayment and $46,800 for tax liability. An extension is possible with a new application.
2) The VSGP Rural Practice Enhancement grant (VSGP-RPE)
RPE: The Rural Practice Enhancement grant is for $125,000 for a 3 year program for rural practitioners for upgrades to improve their delivery of food animal care. You must be in a shortage area to apply for this one.
